Chapter Thirteen

Ever since I was a teenager, I’d been having a recurring dream about a man whose face I’d never seen, but whose presence always filled me with warmth and a deep sense of belonging. His scent was always the same - chocolate-chip cheesecake and sandalwood. I inhaled that same delicious scent as I drifted into the soft glow of wakefulness this morning.

My eyes fluttered open. But, ah! It wasn’t a dream, not anymore.

When you wake up to find David Van Danté gazing at you like you’re the most precious thing in the world, you know it’s going to be a good day.

“Good morning, my sunrise.” He set a steaming cup of tea on the bedside table. “Sleep well?”

I pulled him down for a slow kiss. “Mmm, yes. But I’ve woken up hungry...”

At the foot of the bed, Marmalade Sandwich uncurled from his ginger ball. “Me too! I expect someone will pop a little fishy in the cute kitty’s bowl, yes?”

“I expect someone will.” I glanced down at the floor, where Colin was wagging his bushy corgi tail - ever hopeful that breakfast would be extended to him too.

David sat on the edge of the bed, drawing me into his embrace. “I thought I might go and collect some eggs while you enjoy your tea. Unless Egbert’s still producing packets of custard powder?”

I laughed and relaxed against his chest. “Nope, she’s upgraded to actual eggs now. But I must admit, the custard powder was quite handy.” I glanced up into his loving eyes. “Thank you for accepting me exactly as I am, David. I mean it. I’ve always had to hide my true self in relationships, but with you, I don’t have to hide anymore. I don’t have to be anyone but one hundred percent who I am - Amber Eldritch.”

His brown eyes twinkled back at me. “I love everything about you, Amber. And I happen to think it’s very cool that you have a magical chicken and a friendly dinosaur living in your shed.”

Marmalade Sandwich trotted over, twitching his little pink nose into my face. “Did someone mention breakfast? I’m sure they did.”

I stroked him from the top of his fuzzy head down to the tip of his fluffy tail. “What happened to the breakfast that your automatic feeder served you an hour ago?”

He purred loudly. “That was a pre-breakfast snack.”

David tickled his ears. “He’s talkative this morning, aren’t you, little chap.”

“Mew, mew, mew,” Marmalade Sandwich said cutely, hopping onto his back legs for David - probably in the hope he might feed him.

I took a sip of tea and leaned against my vampire. “I’m really looking forward to going to Maiden Upon Avon later. But first, I need to bake my cake for the chocolate festival cake contest. Harry and Vicky are insisting, but I’m sure it won’t have slipped your memory that the last two commercial cakes I made ended up involved in murder cases. Let’s hope this one isn’t third time unlucky.”

David flashed me a full-fanged grin.
